At What Age Should a Child Be Baptized in Water?

The Bible does not give a specific age for water baptism.

Water baptism is an important step in the New Testament. It should not be taken lightly, but it also should not be ignored or unnecessarily delayed.

Here are three helpful guidelines for parents when deciding if their child is ready:

  1. Is your child born again?
Baptism in the New Testament always followed a person’s decision to believe in Christ. In the book of Acts, people were baptized after they put their faith in Jesus.
  2. Do they understand what baptism means?
Children can understand biblical truth when it is clearly taught. Water baptism identifies us with Christ. Going under the water represents Jesus’ death and burial. Coming up out of the water represents His resurrection. It is a public declaration: “I belong to Jesus.”
  3. Do they want to be baptized?
Don’t pressure them. Teach them what the Bible says and allow them to make the decision themselves.

Water baptism matters because Jesus set the example and commanded us to baptize believers as part of the Great Commission. When kids understand this, we should give them the opportunity to obey Christ.

In other words, teach your kids about water baptism—and give them a chance to take that step of obedience.
