Tongues & Intercession

One of the most powerful things about the gift of tongues is that you can supernaturally pray for things you don’t know about.

“Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with [a]groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26

In 1986, I did not really know much about the prayer of Intercession. I was on staff at a church that did not have any intercessory prayers, and then in October of 1986, I started a new job as Kids Pastor at Living Word in Minneapolis.

Living Word was founded on prayer. Phil and Fern Halvorson, who were powerful intercessors, were members of the Church. Pastor Lynn Hammond taught on prayer every Sunday night. She had organized over 50 intercessory prayer groups, at that time.

One reason the Lord led me to Living Word was to teach me about intercessory prayer. I participated in one of Lynne’s prayer groups. There was a lot of groaning and weeping, as this verse in Romans describes, but it felt awkward to me. I didn’t understand it, so I dropped out. Lynn said I needed to give it more time.

A few months later we were at Kids Camp in northern Minnesota

I had scheduled 30 minutes for morning prayer to kick off the day. In my mind, I planned to make a few announcements, sing one worship song, and ask God to bless our day.

During the worship song, one child came up to the front, then another, and eventually a sizable group of girls came to the altar to intercede and weep. I wasn’t sure what to do.

Again, I did not understand it, but I was smart enough to realize these kids might know more about intercessory prayer than I did, so I followed their lead and let them continue praying. After about twenty minutes, it was time to go to the morning activity. I dismissed the service but encouraged the kids at the front to stay if they wanted to continue praying.

About ten kids stayed, and I sat down and watched. Some of our adult counselors who understood intercessory prayer joined the kids at the front and prayed with them. They continued praying for another 45 minutes and then joined the rest of the kids for their morning activity.

That evening, we had a powerful service. The presence of God was present. I sensed a prophetic anointing, called up a boy named Lucas, and had a word for him. Then, one at a time, I kept calling up kids for whom I had specific words. It felt like I prayed over every kid in the room.

This was unusual for me. Some ministers flow frequently in the word of knowledge, but that was not me. After the service, I told a friend how strong the prophetic anointing was and said, “I wonder where that came from?”

I immediately heard these words in my spirit. “The kids prayed it in.”

This is why praying in tongues is so important. The Holy Spirit wants to do things in our services that we don’t know. When we pray in the Spirit, it paves the way for the Spirit of God to do what he wants.

Do you want to learn how to flow with the Holy Spirit in a Kids Service?

Come to one of our Raising Supernatural Kids Conferences.

We have two planned for this year:

Chesapeake, VA – February 26-27

Bridgeport, WV – March 19 -20

These RSK Conferences are powerful. They are unlike any Kidmin conference you have ever been to.

I’d love to see you there.
