The Most Wonderful Time of the Year – Part Three

STAY HEALTHY

Life is getting real – right now. There are moments my head is spinning – and I know I am prepared for a festive holiday – but still…

Let me tell you a story. Our kids (Marky and Missy) were grown and married. Missy and Lance lived in Oklahoma and Mark and Katie lived in Texas, at the time. They all came home at Christmas. Wow. Every parents dream right. It was great to have them all there. Every outlet in our living area had a phone, computer or iPad plugged in. That was funny.

Christmas Eve, everyone was in bed and I was still up. I was picking up socks, cleaning the counter off, sweeping and I heard this still, small voice say, “Is anyone bothered by this? Has anyone said anything?”

“Hmmmmm – no.” was my answer.

That sweet, small voice said, “Then why are you bothered? Let it go. Relax. Take this time with your family.”

So, that is what I did. No one was bothered by the clutter. I was. The Holy Spirit reminded me that the clutter in the living room doesn’t matter, but the relationship with my family does. I needed to take the time to spend with my family. From that time to this, I usually get a little nudge on the inside, and when I do, I put the dish cloth down and sit with my grandkids and do a craft or watch a show with them.

There is only one of YOU. So take care of YOU.

GET YOUR SLEEP

Holiday preparation and celebrations can disrupt regular sleep patterns. Try to get to sleep at the same time every night. There are times we have to “push it” but don’t make it every night.  You will be more productive rested in the morning.

PLAN HEALTHY SNACKS

Think about you and your family.  It is easy, because of the season, to indulge in those special treats.  So, stock your fridge with good snacks that are easy to grab – carrots, celery, grapes, apples.  Pick your favorites and push these when you can.  My friend Melissa R., grabs a veggie platter from the deli – it’s all ready for those healthy snacks.

GRAB A PEPPERMINT

Peppermint is proven to help digestive issues like nausea and stomach cramps, it can also bring you back from a bout of light-headedness, decrease frustration during crazy traffic and help clear your sinuses.  Use peppermint mints, candies or essential oils.

CALM LAVENDER

Lavender essential oil diffused in the home is a natural stress reliever that brings calm and lowers anxiety.  Lavender can help with sleep and mood too.  I have a friend, Evangeline S. who has a line of essential oils that are great.

You know you, so prepare ahead and you will find that things may be easier.
