What is Lamplight?

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

This scripture became very real to me a few years ago. I was ministering at a church in Hilo, Hawaii. I told the pastor I wanted to visit the live volcano about 45 minutes from his church. He gave some specific directions to Volcanoes National Park. My friend told me where to park my car and what path to take, and the best time to go was right before sunset because you see the lava stream best when it’s dark. Then he gave me a vital piece of information. “Be sure to bring a flashlight.”

I followed my teacher’s advice, and we stopped at Walmart to pick up a flashlight on the way to the Volcanoes National Park. After viewing the active lava stream from the volcano, we turned and started the journey back to our car, about a mile away. 

It was dark and we were walking on volcanic rocks.  The ground was not flat. I shined my flashlight on the ground directly in front of my feet to avoid tripping or falling into a crevice. I thought about this scripture, and we ambled forward, one step at a time. 

“Your Word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.”

Without the flashlight, I could have made it back to my car, but not without falling or perhaps some injury. I needed two things:  a light and a mentor to make it safely to my car. 

The same things are required for anyone who ministers to kids. You need God’s Word, and you need a mentor. You might survive without a mentor, but the road will be bumpy. It’s simply the smart thing to do: ask someone to help you that has gone where you want to go. This is the purpose of Lamplight Academy. 

What is Lamplight Academy? 

Lamplight Academy is an online school and mentorship for Kids Pastors and Children’s Ministry Leaders. 

Lamplight Academy will offer ten courses over the next two years to cover every aspect of Kids Ministry. Each course will have eight to twelve video sessions and some reading assignments. 

The first twelve-session course, Building a Kids Ministry From the Ground Up, will launch on April 8. After that, we will be offering a new course every three months.
